I'm happy with the theory that he's a work of fiction (by numerous different authors) based on various potentially real life characters/situations which has been passed through various filters/mincers/chinese whispers/hearsay iterations. At that time in history (whatever 'that time' may have been) most of this area (nottinghamshire, derbyshire, yorkshire, leicestershire & lincolnshire) would have been forest so even if there is a particular person/incident that can be taken as the 'source' it certainly couldn't be tied to a particular county.
Just my two-penneth.

Well I don't know who Robin Hood was and whether he was fact or fiction, but I feel that everytime we pickup a longbow (or any bow for that matter) there is a little bit of Robin Hood in all of us.
My guess is that he's the first archer that comes to mind when stringing that bow, or stepping up to the line as we ready to let that arrow fly.

Tracing Santa down isn't nearly as hard as finding the origins of Robin Hood or King Arthur. Good luck in trying, and watch whose toes you step on along the way.

Robin Hood, I believe, grew out of legends and myths about the Green Man. In the Robin Hood (the Hooded Man) series done in the 1980s, played by Michael Praed and, later Jason Connery, Robin is depicted as an outlaw in the finest tradition of the story; his father being Herne the Hunter. Herne is an ancient God of Celtic and British legend, his name deriving from the noise that deer make during the mating/rutting season. Whether Robin Hood was a noble-man who had been cheated out of his rightful inheritance from the Sheriff of Nottingham is unknown, but it might be that he was more likely to be a local outlaw whose story has become embellished over the years, courtesy of storytellers.
Never mind, though. It all makes for some rather good films.
