Well.....I was exclusively a target archer shooting recurve, as well as being a GNAS coach, but I'm turning to the dark side and have picked up the bent stick and just about to send off my membership to a field club. While the Zen like discipline of target archery is fascinating, I think field archers just seem to have more fun. I think it's the hunter in me. I am also an angler and enjoy the slightly primeval sensation of the hunt.

What I should have said was. "I shoot target" But as the target is in a field. I must be a Field archer perhaps I was right in the first place then

no option for target and field? or are you looking for your predominant discipline?

for the last year I suppose it's accurate to say 'Armchair', but target is mine, but field for all out fun....there's something about scrabbling in the mud, loosing and losing arrows and not caring too much about it.

At the moment, we shoot both outside at a target (is this called field archery?) and indoors at a beginners night with a target.

The other half shoots longbow, although he has tried recurve and doesn't mind it. I shoot exclusively recurve as I can't draw longbow.

As a very rough guide -

Target archery is either indoor or outdoor, usually at a target with scoring rings.

Field archery is often shot in woodland, usually at a target with a picture of an animal with score areas, or a 3D animal target.

There are several other differences between the two some information here,

Hope this helps

Given Dawn's definition of field I had to vote for other. On this side of the pond "field archery" is either NFAA/IFAA rounds or FITA Field. What you folks call field is 3D or stump shooting.

I am a serious (well as serious as a retired geezer with disabilities can be - lol) field archery competitor. I also shoot target archery (both 900 rounds and indoor stuff) for the practice.

Some one ask why anyone would shoot target...how about to perfect form and discipline? If you can shoot 6 arrows in a row and hit some where in the vicinity of what you are aiming at you are an archer. If you can't you are just playing around with a bow and arrow.

Dave

Definitely field for me. I find target boring, I shoot a couple of York rounds at my club each year and by arrow number 144 I'm bored out of my mind, I only do it to support the club.

Give me field anyday. Even with field though I must state I do not like measured distances, if you know how far the target is , you may as well shoot at a gold spot, hadn't you

Like another contributer to this thread I am a hunter (live game) unfortunately in the UK we are not allowed to use a bow for some reason, (the mind boggles) I can use a shot gun, a rifle, a catapult, even throw a rock, and as a youngster on my fathers farm catch game, and use my bare hands to expidite it to the pot for dinner, but I cannot shoot an arrow at it. As I said the mind boggles.

Anyone out there would like to invite me and the wife for a holiday to do some real shooting?

I have the broadheads for both my compounds and my grozer & longbow, ready to go.
