My partner (who shoots longbow) says that I am drawing the bowstring back too quickly and that if I carry on, I shall be treating my nice recurve bow as if it was firewood and it will snap.

I am about to go on a beginners course but have been shooting in the local forestry on my new recurve (a beginner's Samick trainer bow from Quicks) with Easton Jazz arrows for about a month. The bow's draw weight is 22 lbs (I think) compared to my partner's longbow which is a 30lb draw (I think - its a heavier draw weight than mine on account of his strength).

He reckons I pull the bowstring back too quickly and that I should take more time to draw.

Any advice?

Thanks

To be consistent is the key to shooting well, as you start you beginners course you will hear a lot about being consistant, repeating the same actions in the same way each time

I usually tell my beginners to try to do the actions of standing up to the shooting peg, getting ready, drawing the bow and loosing the arrow as one nice smooth action, no jerks, no rush try to be methodical, if its easier for you try counting to yourself, like 1 deep breath, 2 settle on the peg, 3 nock the arrow, 4 look at the target etc.

Your bow will perform better if you if you are smooth with it and as a result you will shoot better

Hope this helps

My only thought is if you pull fast are you shooting fast?, do you give yourself time to compose the shot. I found that some of are clubs better shots nearly always came off the line last. Its not a game to be won by speed.
