Can anybody please tell me about releases? Are they needed for a compound such as mine(most of the pics I've seen of people shooting compounds, they've got a release)? Are the cheap ones on ebay not worth it, or is it just the expensive looking ones on merlin etc...?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

A release aid is not compulsary with compound, depends on your personal preference. If you go for a scope then you may as well go the full hog and have the release as you'll be classed as unlimited with the scope anyway (NFAS rules)
You can get different types of release, wrist releases are generally cheaper than thumb releases or tension releases, again that depends on your personal preference.
A good wrist release will cost anywhere from £30 upwards and a good thumb release can cost up to a £100. The truball stinger is worth a shot at around £20 if you want to try a wrist release. I can also recommend the Scott wrist releases, these start at around £40. I have not used a thumb release so could not comment on them.

I have a Tru-ball stinger. Chris @ Merlin advised i started with one Well made & straight forward to use, bit of a pain pulling arrows whilst wearing it, though
£29-99 in store & a few £ less online. Go & try one, if you can, rather than a 1st purchase on the internet

I would seriously encourage you to decide if you are going to shoot release aid or finger release before you progress.
If you do go the release aid route go to a reputable archery dealer and try a few before you buy

I bought a cheapie Spigarelli of ebay to see if I liked the whole release aid thing!! OK its a rope rather than a jaw aid, but it will do to see if I like them.
Not everyone likes release aids.
Usually I shoot Ltd, but after reading the tech stuff on Merlins website, something that is mentioned on there rang a bell or few.
So this weekend is trialing the new release (Thumb release 2000) and if I like it, then I'll go looking for a thumb or index finger release with a safety catch.

Spigarelli stuff is usually very good. Seeming you have not paid much for it, you have very little to lose in trying it.

Theres always one or two carter release aids on ebay. I use a carter and have had no problems with it and its smooth and easy to use.

Sounds painful
Having mixed results with mine I find that i get to full draw & the 'stops', then sort of ponder where to go next, being a veteran recurve/clicker archer. I took the bow back to Merlin to have it checked over, was having a spot of 'hassle' with the peep not positioning properly & blocking my vision Ben took the bow away, unstrung it, revolved the string & restrung it. All aligned fine after that. I have had a few 'tips' off other compounders at my new Target club....... "try this peep sight, try that release, etc.. etc......".Chris set me up with the bow & its going to stay that way for a while.
I possibly 'punch' the release (that sounds painful, too )
May see if they will coach me for an hour or two, God help them , I have more faith in them than the new club compounders.
