Hi all,
Hope you have all sobered up from new year
I need a bit of help with a scope problem, if anyone has any thoughts on it i would be very grateful.
The problem is that i usually shoot scope indoors and pins in the field but feel i am penalising myself in unlimited by not using my scope. But whenever i try to shoot in the woods with it i cant see a thing. The picture seems to blend in.
I've tried different peeps, have bought a larger scope to give me a better field of view but nothing seems to work.....
I have shot with loads of archers that shoot scope in the field and they don't seem to have anyprobs seeing what they are hitting.
Heeeelllp,Please.

Moved this into the compound section, hopefully you'll get a better response
Not sure if its just a case of getting used to it to be honest, I struggled at first, still do in poor light but it is getting easier.

This is a typical problem with using a scope for field.
There are also a great number of varibles to consider too
firstly, the size of the scope, too small and you are fishing around the target for the kill, too big and you can't centre the thing with a peep sight
Secondly the quality of the lens, a cheap plastic affair, will not have the same quality as an expensive milled glass one, (although I am not entireley sold on the rather fashionable flat lenses as they seem to bounce reflections more easily than a convex one.
Thirdly, the design, most higher end ones allow as much light as possible into the scope
Fourthly, the distance between your eye and the lens. Most lenses are designed around a set focal length, move away from that and you lose clarity. I beleive that the Sure-loc is @ 32", a lot longer than I used to shoot, however when I tried this distance, although my clarity was there, the useful yardage of my scope dropped significantly.
Fifth, the size of the peep aperture, too small, you can't get the light in, too big and you lose the definition
To sum up, it's a real pain in the a$$ getting the scope to work well.
I have significantly better clarity and definition with a 29mm cartel cheapo than I have with my expensive Viper 42mm.
yet the Cartel is useless at field, because you are fishing around the target for the spot.
I have now got my 42mm reduced down to 35mm viewable, so I can reduce my peep sight aperture to get clarity and is still easy to centre on the scope.
I have the scope out at full distance on my field bow, where I don't expect to shoot 70m and have it 2 marks in for target, where I do (using a smaller scope and peep)
The best way I found may frighten the neighbours, but get a superpeep and mess with the aperture and scope position whilst pointing at a car reg plate. If you can't read it, you won't find a pro kill in a wood either.
The best tip I can give and some people can't do this, is to shoot with both eyes open, you get two images, which is confusing but after a bit of practise it is like watching a picture in picture tv, you scan over with your non shooting eye and where you are looking is where the scope is pointing, also you get more light into you optic nerves which does brighten things up a lot.
Finally, using a scope is a compromise, it takes time to find that ideal compromise.
Good luck

Cheers both.
I have a superpeep so i will have to have a play around at the range...I have always shot pins but want to give the scope a go.So i bought the larger of the cartel scopes,I thought its not too expensive if i dont get on with it,I would be upset if i bought a surelock scope and found i don't like it.So sounds like i'v got a lot of trial and error to go

Hi Bowblamer,
I tried a large bore cartel scope (Ruthy was given one, so I borrowed it )
It is a totally different animal to the smaller Cartel scope, in fact I shot one end and took it off the bow!
I'm not sure how far you are from Merlin (where we practice) but you are more than welcome to try my Viper. I found the difference "night and day"
Whilst I would agree that trying to find the cheapest option usually works, optics are one area where money often counts. It's a bit like Tesco's readers against a pair from Dolland and Aichison

Thanks for the offer ratfighter, much appreciated. But i don't get to venture down that way very often.
I only ever get to Merlin if i need my bow tinkering with, they do a great job.I may make a day of it when i can guarantee the weather will be a bit better, perhaps in the spring.
Is your viper the pin sight with the lense.Someone at our club had one ,nice bit of kit.
He had the amber lense it really sharpened things up.
Is there a supplier in Britain that stock viper? because he had to get his from America.

The viper is a traditionally styled single pin, plano glass coated 42mm scope.
You can get these from the Marvellous Tony Weston at the Archery Company (link to the left <------)
I would also add that Merlin (link to the left <------) are currently in production of a new scope, which in my opinion is the next step in design. I have seen the prototype and if the final product is as good then one will definitely be adourning my bows next year.
They are due out in a few week's time but I'll leave the release details to Merlin

Cool, can't wait to see it.
Maybe we might get a sneek preview if we ask nicely.
