Bows now sporting my own strings!!!! yummy!!
I was relieved to find that Una Vita hadn't buried my beautiful Mathews in the garden, when I retuned home this morning.
I had used the opportunity of a night shift to explore the Mathews Tech forum. What a refreshing change to find plenty of useful information at my fingertips.
After a bit of kip I went to have a play with the LX. A quick check has shown the idler wheel angle to be quite a bit out, the timing of the cam is also a little out and the tiller just needed a tickle. I'm not going to bother making any alterations as there will hopefully be a set of SDM strings arriving soon.
Shooting the bow is a pleasure pain thing at the moment. The stock (and rediculoulsy bulky) grip has been replaced by a Hicks Pro, the problem is, this leaves quite a sharp shelf exposed. As the bow jumps forward during release, this is bashing my thumb joint. 50 shots into my retraining programme and it was really quite sore. I have covered the ridge with some racquet tape for now but will be posting to see if any AR members could make one of those pretty custom grips, oh so popular in the states! Apart from the knuckle problem, the bow shoots really nicely, the power curve is very progressive, with no big wall on roll over. Once over the top, the bow sits against the most solid wall I have ever felt. I am on the 80% let off setting and whilst not a big fan of 80%, my newly developed technique works just fine with it. As the 65% peg gives 1/2" less drawlength and is in effect just stopping the cam short, I can see no point in changing it at this point.
The Mathews was bought as a stop gap but to be honest, the more I read of it and the brief chances I have had to shoot it, the more I'm growing into owning it. Of course that could all go to ratstuff the first chance I get to try and shoot it whilst aiming at something, somehow I doubt it.
reprogramming
I feel, after around 1500 shots in practise, that it is time I opened my eyes! I have been blank baling for @ 3 weeks now, although not as often as I would like, I can now feel the release working. The next stage is to introduce looking (not aiming) through the sight window at the target. I am hoping this will indicate how I am supposed to stop concentrating on the release. I have took this reprogramming really steady so far and I feel quite confident in the progress I have made. The book recommends you keep your eyes closed for about a week, but the process has really only sunk in properly over the last few days. _________________ MERLIN ARCHERY CLUB

Shoulda seen Kathy when she read about your little "problem" over the acquisition, Ratfighter, couldn't stop giggling and got worse every time I asked her what the deal was. And they say men are all alike...
Sounds like you're following the book correctly, so I won't say anything. Doing this by your lonesome is difficult, but you're handling it well enough. Might consider a grinder job for the shelf, lot of serious Mathews shooters here usually do once they change grips. Otherwise, good going, keep it up bro.
Thanks Steve. Strange lot these womenfolk. U-V says my bow is nice and warm at the moment, not quite sure what that means!
I'm not sure I would want to take a grinder to the bow, it's far too pretty for that and the resale value would hit the dirt.
The racquet tape will do for now, in fact every bow I have had for the last few years has ended up with it on the grip.

Gotta give her one thing, Ruthie's got a way with words! More meanings to that than a skunk's got fleas.
Sounds like you're one of those guys that has big mitts, so you're probably right, you could go with a more fitted custom grip. Hopefully there's somebody that can answer that other thread of yours about this. Me, I just ground down that standard grip till it was flat on all sides, like the alloy jobs that are marketed separately.
The grip woods you see are mostly dyed or synthetic/wood laminations. I've got an eye out for fossilized mammoth ivory panel blanks for my Phoenix when it comes in, will have the factory grip-maker fit them. Nice contrast against the black finish, I think.
