IF (that word again) the blessed electric company finally puts in the juice, the clean-up crew will be able to finish the house in a couple of days and hand us the keys. IF that happens this week, we won't need to wait on the porch and rear stairs being completed before starting to move in. Those things are due to start Monday, as the permit was finally approved recently. So far we're a month behind schedule, and the weather's been relatively mild, but that's beginning to change already. Temperatures are averaging 30-35 degrees now, and are creeping toward 40-45 as Spring fades into high Summer. Some things you just can't avoid, so we're resigned to a slower transfer in the cool parts of the mornings before the heat of the day sets in, or moving at night. We're going to be on Siesta-time for a good while.

Too true, bro. As it is, we're at the stage where the old shack is more like a shipping crate, with little alleyways between boxes piled to the ceiling. We never had the room to unpack all of what we brought from Kalifornia, but the cats are having a great time with all the new hiding places we've created in there.

Been spending some time going over the new house as the cleaning crew is working on final touch-ups. Electricity is finally established, so the fridge, microwave, dishwasher and lights are up. Gonna have to replace all the bulbs with fluorescents or LED's, however; will cost a fortune to light the place otherwise. Got some water issues, lot of crud left over from laying the water line seems to be blocking interior piping, though there's plenty of pressure outside, so the system has to be flushed ASAP. Found a broken faucet in the master bathroom, leaks down into the cabinet when opened. Last metal roof-peak section is still missing; contractor will have to go to Yuma personally to pick it up if it doesn't show by Monday. We've had a little rain twice in the last week, but the waterproof base is holding, so I'm not that concerned, but we won't formally take possession until this is resolved. Not much else, yet.
Couple of loads of gravel were brought in, to be spread close around the house to prevent erosion and to pave the driveway. Contractor still hasn't shown up to build the front porch/ramp and back stairs even though they were expected yesterday. We can do without for a while, but neither Kathy nor myself get along with those temporary steps, so the guys better get going soon or somebody's gonna have an ear-full. As soon as we have possession, I'll call the propane gas company to request they move the tank to the new place and hook up the water-heater and stove. After that, and the stairs/ramp being completed, the security fence will be put up, the last step. Somewhere in there, hopefully, the move will go on.

About the time that the contractors decided to begin work on the front/back porches and stairs, we got a half-inch of rain (and 18-inches of snow north of us!), but things went on afterwards:
The front ramp and porch are first-quality, just needing the sheet-metal roofing to be complete. We're debating as to whether myself or a hired hand will paint it. Unfortunately, the work supervisor took off early on Friday and left his crew behind to finish the rear stairs, big mistake on his part because he's in for some unpleasantness when he gets back from holiday. The "gentlemen" he assigned took about every shortcut you could name and bungled the measurements to boot, so the back porch is going to have to be rebuilt nearly from scratch. Pity, was going to get the final clearance to start moving in, but that may not happen now. It's gonna be an interesting week.

Isn't this typical, especially when you want to on with things, anything that can go wrong will go wrong, but the positive part is that things are on the go and the things that need to be done will be as I am guessing till things are signed off they don't get paid....normally thats a great incentive
It is good to see that things are still moving ahead Steve and Kathy, even though sometimes not to plan

Well, that's me, ever the squeaky wheel. The crew came back yesterday, apparently seeking contrition in order to get paid, and proceeded to make up for lost time and stupidity. Final touches are due today, so we can actually see daylight coming. Only two months behind, but it's coming. With luck, the move starts next week.

Believe it or not, the move has started, though not on a grand scale as yet. Porches are done (except for painting), site's been cleaned up and readied for gravel being laid, gas company is coming to move the propane tank and hook up lines next week, plumbing is tight and running at nominal pressure, and everything electric inside the house seems to be working. Officially notified of all this Friday night, we threw a few items over there to "mark our territory", then sat back to wait until we're paid, so that the stuff we've got in storage can be gotten out of hock. I'll be bringing some things over today from the old shack and arranging some help for the heavier work later on in the week. Don't expect the process to be completed very soon, but at least we anticipate that we'll be through it by the end of June, and actually living there in a week or so. Hallelujah!

That is fantastic news Steve, look forward to you being in there, for the room, the niceness of it being new and heck just because you both deserve it

The new place is ready to live in, now that the propane tank's been moved, installed and refueled; stove and water heater were also prepped and are functioning:
As can be seen in these pics, gravel bedding was laid in just before dusk, so erosion is no longer a worry. Will have to lay down some block steps for access later on, but they can wait until we're in for good:
We'll be arranging for delivery of our stored items and new bed today, hopeful they'll arrive later in the week. Stuff in the old shack is being slowly moved already, depending on my back and shoulder. The temperature's been running in the high thirties, but hasn't been too much of a damper on activity thanks to the air-conditioning, so progress continues.

Yup, the arrangements were completed yesterday for delivery of the stored furniture, which will probably be on Sunday. The other stuff will in by Tuesday, so we should be cooking breakfast in the new kitchen by then. Then we can concentrate on slowly transferring what's left in the old shack over the rest of June, before the rainy season starts in July.
Also yup, six inch bed of gravel over a layer of weed-blocking cloth. Going to try and keep the immediate area around the house cleared of brush as much as possible, both for wildfire suppression and pest control, so that maybe I can finally have that garden out back that I've wanted; got plans for a green house there, but that's a long-range dream.
