As you will all know i went to the 'taste of Vegas' shoot hosted by Merlin at Loughborough Uni today.
After watching the last 30 minutes of the 'real' vegas shoot on the pc i felt even more nervous   I could feel the pressure for those guys and i was only watching them on the pc monitor..
Anyway after a reasonable nights sleep i left the house heading for the Uni. I arrived in plenty of time so i could get the feel of the place and hopefully settle my nerves a little. I set my bow up straight away and went to book in.

The start whistle...
After a short speech by Chris Jones (judge, jury, organiser and spokes person)  he blew his whistle to start the 2 ends of 3 sighters. I was a bit worried that my sights wouldn't be right as it seems to change for indoors  (no idea why they just do!) With only a slight adjustment to my windage and a couple of yards added on for being indoors it went well. Now it was for real 10 ends of 3 arrows at 18 metres.
Yes i was very nervous now and just needed to get a couple of good ends out and then i could settle down into the rhythm. I was shooting with another sighted compound (gent) and 2 recurve shooters and they we're all very friendly so if nothing else i was going to enjoy the day   . It went very well we shot all 30 and i managed a great score of 299 out of 300 matching the gents   I was very pleased indeed.
After the 1st session i was leading by 9 points which is quite a lot really in this game   I felt comfortably in the lead. I wasn't being complacent i just felt i was in a comfortable place.
We had a 20 minute break and then back again for the 2nd set of 30.
This set wasn't so good for me, i felt quite lethargic and there was a lack of  pressure   . I like the pressure and work well with it, but it was gone and my score was suffering   My concentration levels were also down and my rhythm wasn't happening however I still managed a 292 out of 300, i know, you're thinking "that's still very good" and yes you're right but i know i can shoot better than that and was slightly disappointed with myself so with another 20 minute break i went on the hunt to find that pressure that had deserted me
After this 2nd session 2nd place had gained on me and closed the gap to me being only 5 points ahead   This would help with the pressure and i also asked Aaron who was keeping the leader board up to date after every 12 arrows to keep me informed of the girl's scores! Which he did and it helped, i felt a some pressure again and it increased my score for the last 30. I scored 294 which is still low considering what i know i can do but still a good score overall
Generally i felt i shot well, i know where i can make some improvements for future tournaments there were a couple of moments were i stabbed the trigger and wasted what could have been a good arrow, i don't do it very often but i need to eliminate it completely
After the 3rd and final session i had snatched my lead back and finished 1st by a good 10 points

I'd done it, my first feel of winning money for winning a tournament, ok it's not mega money but it's a start and i thoroughly enjoyed it!

I came away with a shiny gold medal/trophy    and £70 better off
I am the champion of the 1st Vegas style shoot held in the UK! I am very happy and feel quite exhausted now, it takes some real concentration and accuracy both of which escaped me partly through the day but in the end it all came good.

Thanks go to merlin for putting the shoot on and also to you guys for your continued support throughout
Thank you
Ruthy xx

Alright Ruthy! Had a feeling you'd make it through okay, and you've confirmed what I'd heard about the "mental fatigue factor" that sets in about the middle of a Vegas match. Kinda like the mid-match low of a day's combat shoot, but quieter. Congrats, and don't spend it all in one place.

Thanks Steve
I'm interested in this 'mental fatigue factor' I've never heard of it myself but it makes perfect sense!  It was right in the middle where i suffered the most   The arrows that i could have saved were definitely my fault but the middle was something different and i never suffered with it before.. but i have never shot over such a long period of time either.
Well, i need to find out how i can handle the 'MFF' better and turn it into a positive  otherwise it could cost me a competition

Thanks for that Steve it's really got me thinking

Massive congratulations!

Still annoyed I didn't make it there... otherwise I could've got you a congratulatory drink in!

Sounds like it was a good day.

Just one thing though... you say it was your first taste of winning real money for a competition... do we take this to mean that The Ratfighter didn't cough up the six pounds last time?

Thanks Chedawan, it's a shame you didn't make it you missed a cracking day. Merlin were great hosts

And yes you're right in thinking that Mr Ratty indeed has not paid his debt as yet, but that's ok I'll wait until the amount is of a more considerably larger figure and then call it in

One part of it is keeping up your energy levels so that you don't lose concentration. Your brain works with carbohydrates for immediate needs, and requires oily fats and proteins for the longer hauls. Sports medicine shows that, and you can help this by dosing with fish oil capsules for 48-hours prior and up to a competition, if you don't take them regularly. Do not eat heavy meals on the day of a comp, or at least within an hour of the meet, but keep a few high-protein/high carb bars (not the ones with a lot of added sugar, they cause you to crash early) for the break periods. Unless you ordinarily drink a lot of coffee or caffeinated drinks, avoid them on meet day and the night before. Light exercise is recommended, like walking, because it helps you maintain blood flow under stress, but has to be done on a regular basis to avoid fatigue. The idea is to smooth out the lows that happen in the down time between sessions, especially since you're a pressure-shooter. Hope that helps.

Woah Woah and thrice Woah.
Yes I admit fully that the £6 debt has not been paid. On account of the outstanding debt of £15 owed to the Banc de Ratfighteur from Miss "I forgot all about that 70m pasting I received at BBA" Lochlea.

I therefore feel disenfranchised toward settling any further bets until the remaining £9 is deposited. With 2 shoots coming up on Ratfighter home territory , namely unmarked field. I feel that the debt is likely to swing heavily toward the rattier part of Burton.

Nuff sed

Well done Ruthy had no doubts you would do it, just keep building on what you've got.

One of the things I've been working on is to switch on/off the focus at will  i.e only when I'm on the peg about to shoot, I've seen a lot of good shooters burn out because they think they have to be focused 100% of the time, I found by switching on/off at the right time I'm a lot more relaxed and dont run out of steam half way through a tourney

See a few people wearing headphones between rounds these days, helps distract the mind from overthinking the ongoing performance

Ruthy a hearty cheer of "WELL DONE" comes out of Aussie Land for you, well done ..... I am fully supportive of the "lessons learned" stuff and that is good to make a positive from a perceived negative. But you done so good girl

I like what Zetabow has said about the switching off and not burning yourself out I am teaching myself that one , but I must admit is can sometimes be difficult to switch back on 100% but love the words....

By the sound of it Ruthy you could pay Ratty501 the 9 quid you owe now....that wiould mean he would be happy as well... and two happy pople in the same house well, it doesn't get any better

Aw Steve, we are always happy in our house. I think I'm better off keeping the £9 in credit the way Ruthy is shooting. I just hope I get my ACE's before she does so I can get a nice balance stacked up to take me through the rest of the year.

It was a shame that I couldn't be there for the Vegas shoot. It is the first time we have not gone to a competition together. Probably worse still that I couldn't get to sleep for thinking of how she was doing. Maybe next time I'll take a sleeping bag and doss down in the corner, occasionally lifting an eyelid to take note of the score!

For the record Well done Ruthy, I'm really proud of you!

Steve it takes a little time but once it becomes part of you shot routine it really is just like a swich, maybe I'll expand this on another thread as I dont want to hijack Ruthy's blog
