What Class?

I am currently negotiating the purchase of this Hungarian Reflex Bow (Magyars) made from Osage Orange

What style will this be classed as under NFAS rules, I'm a complete novice to this twig shooting business

Oh and Jase, get the Longbow Shop ready for an incoming order of accessories
Selwoc

Liam, if you are using wooden arrow, I think you would be classed as Hunting Tackle, if non wood, then Barebow
AFB

I would agree H/T or Barebow.
kirk

That's it HT with big fat woods, bronze barred feathers. Nice.

no tools no excuses
Dawn

I agree, in the NFAS feather fletched woodies and using med loose will put you in H/T

any other arrows or 3 finger under loose will put you in Barebow

Looking forward to seeing how you get on

We are holding a roving marks on 8th June (more info in the Midlands shoot details) you may like to come along and have a go at that

Liam, I noticed on another post you were selling your compound
bow.  Are you giving the compound up and going with the stick bow
now?  Which by the way I think would be great.  Nothing quite like
getting back to the basics.

Hi Dawn,

Don't want to hijack the thread but what's roving marks please.

Never heard of that one.

Thanks,

Les

Yes Joe(thebow) the compound has gone!! Just wasn't enjoying my archery any more so back to basics it is

Pafc - here's a little info on Roving Mark

So H/T it is then, suspected so but though I'd better ask before entering myself as H/T at a shoot

Is that a Karel bow from Ebay Liam? If so I can heartily recommend as I have a 55lb one for fun myself that I bought a couple of years ago - exactly as described and came to me well packaged - very fast bow and a dream to pull

No worries on supplies mate you know where I am

I can certainly understand what you're saying Liam, the same thing happened
to myself with the compound.  Sometimes we just need to make a change an
re'establish our enjoyment of the game.

I do like the looks of the bow you're looking at.  Someday I might even try to
build one?  I need to study up on in more however.

Hi Liam,

Thanks for that link. Roving marks sounds like good fun. We are members of a field club and that is all we have done to date.

Our club has been invited to a clout shoot later in the year though, which we are really looking forward to. Also, there was talk of a night shoot with only candles for illumination, which again sounds excellent.

Cheers,

Les

What arrows you shooting with yours Jase? And are they available from TLBS?

Was looking at your deluxe target arrows, which spine would you recommend for a 50-55lb'er ?

(Going to buy first set of arrows ready made before making some rather fetching Archers Rest woddies)

Again dont want to hijack this thread but Les you will love the 'night shoot' (we call it a coon shoot relative to shooting raccoons in America I believe) We have done many of these through the years and it is surprising how well you can hit the target when you can barely see it    I have never done a clout but believe they are great fun too.

Liam this is all very exciting    really looking forward to seeing your new set up especially when you have made you AR special arrows

Hi mate

I use Sitka 11/32 shafts 50lb spine for a 55lb bow at 28" draw with 4" shields and 100gn brass bullets. They fly very nicely indeed and group well. Only managed to shoot to 60 yards with them so far but they flew very fast last outdoor season

I can sort you out with some arrows no probs just let me know when you're ready

Hi Liam, lovely looking bow, I've got similar recurve myself. Could you post a link to where your getting this one from, I know it's e-bay, but is it from an e-bay shop or...? Just curious to see what sort of stuff they sell, and I might just be tempted!

I found with my Hungarian recurve that despite being shot off the hand the "- 5-10 spine" rule that's used for longbows can sometimes make the arrows a bit weak. I normally use arrows spined pretty close to the draw weight of the bow, or slightly under and this seems to work well. This is using 100 grain points by the way.
jaselpool

Yep 10lb is too much - if you're using 100gn points drop it 5lb under bow weight if using heavier 125gn points use same as bow weight.

Karels-SHOP

Nice bows especially for the price.

Jase
Liam

Karel does have some good deals, I paid £83 +P&P for mine, usually advertised at a very reasonable £99
Fanatical_Fletcher

Thanks Jase, good prices there. By the way, I've just been making some arrows with some bits I got from you, very impressed with the sitka spruce shafts, I really like them.

Excellent stuff! Where's the pics then?

I'll get some up as soon as I've got them finished, I'm still fletching them at the moment. I'm using the NPV saunders glue, (also from you!) it seems to work very well, but the only downside is it takes a while to dry, and since I can only fletch them on the evening when I'm not at school it's taking a while!

I used Colron Danish oil on these, 3 coats gave them a beautiful finish and brought out a lovely colour in the wood. I also got some of the 11/32 unspined shafts which I'm using to make some self-nocked arrows for a guy in a re-enactment group I'm in, they're really nice as well, nice and defined grain.
Liam

It's arrived

Have not shot it yet but the craftmanship looks great, already I'm smiling again and looking forward to flinging some arrows from it.

Will give a report on the bow once I've had a play.
Steve B

Good to see that smile on your face again Liam, I know you will love this stuff, I know when I get a chance I do, reAlly good to see the excitement in your words

Hi Dawn,

There has been some talk of a coon shoot being held in the not-too-distant future at an archery club near where I live !!!!

Also, hoping to do a clout shoot at a nearby club later this year - will have to work on a couple of people re roving marks next !!

Les
dtalbot

Be prepaired to loose and break lots of arrows Liam, Dawn saw (and heard )what happened when I caught a tree with a glancing bow from my 50lb Mongolian at the woods last Sat! Put it like this, I think I found most of the bits of the shaft and at least the point ended up in the target!
My Mongolian is an absolute hoot to shoot, and certainly a nice short horse bow gives you a bit of an easier time on some of these cunniningly place pegs where the surrounding vegetation makes life interesting for the longbow and recurve archers!
