The Sound of Silence

I use this style of string, the Mountain Muffler from the Tradtalk.com store, though not for reasons one might suggest:

Obviously one can reproduce this design with various materials. The upper fluffs quiet string-slap against the limbs, while the lower ones shut down the twang particularly associated with fast-flight strings. The difference in noise levels between a bare string and the MM is almost mindblowing, so there's a clear advantage when hunting. Large game may hear it shoot, but the sound is very subtle and confusing, so they're more likely to freeze instead of "jump the string".

That really isn't the only advantage I've noted with the reduction of noise, however. For one thing, I've found that string life is increased dramatically, probably due to dampening of vibration. For another, I have an easier time avoiding "flinch" as I release, as I can concentrate on the shot better for not anticipating a loud BWANG! Yes, there is a small loss of arrow velocity with all that stuff attached to the string, but I'll take that slight problem and run with it. I understand the MM string works great with longbows as well, so I think it's worth a look at the concept.
