Recurve Sights: Go Bare Or Compromise?Rusty Craine on Tradtalk.com has run some great posts on the DAS SRF sight, which I think is a wonderful compromise for people who want a sight on their recurve, but can't stand the idea of those elaborate scopes and such. I've one on order for my Quinn Comet, thought it might be useful for some here to see examples of how the SRF works, and if it might meet their needs:

Here's how it works. Center the sight around the point of the target you want to hit, align string and anchor, shoot.

There's an adhesive mount for applications that don't allow drilling and tapping your bow. See the website for DAS here:

OK now we are gettin into the kind of stuff that interests me. All the best innovations and kit for 3D target recurve come from your side of the pond Seagolden.
I like the idea, would give fast target acquisition for hunting, and good for barebow training, kind of keep you in the ballpark while working on your form release etc.
I suppose you could use it as a range finder as well.
Over here you would be shooting freestyle against Olympic sight set ups, so it would be a disadvantage, but as i said for barebow training and pure fun it's a winner.
By the way Seagolden whats your handle on tradtalk i'm over there every night.

Same handle, Kirk, never claimed to be original. Don't post over there much anymore, gets tiring being ignored by some of the more "senior" members, but I still pop in occasionally.
I don't really see the SRF in competition because of present rules allowing the other high-end tech you mentioned. What might be happening in future is this type of sight in a class by itself, because it's all over the web here, and the latest archery shows like Kalamazoo have gone bonkers over both the DAS Kinetic bows and the sights. Once it hits the cable-TV hunting/sports shows, the general archery public will see what a revolution may be brewing.
The elongation of the sight's shape is exactly what you observed, a means of judging range. I dislike pins, too distracting for my deteriorating eyesight, but this allows me (theoretically) to concentrate on the target without having to guess what sight-picture to use for what distance.
Though I got some static for it, I was speculating a while ago about using a string-peep in conjunction with the SRF. The circle-within-a-circle principle is a natural biomechanical factor in human eyesight, and has been used successfully in military applications (I took part in such experiments in the past, and saw outstanding results), so why not here? As is, form is critical when using the SRF alone, but a peep would probably jump the accuracy considerably, perhaps even allowing it to compete with more exotic systems. Just my own opinion, naturally, though I intend to check it out later.

I have found in recurve sight shooting that a simple kisser button is the best because my thoughts are that a consistant draw length is the critical factor for recurves and that is what I am working on now with my curve
But I like the interesting concept of the sight

Nice one segolden.Never thought of that, it would be a rear sight, wouldn't work for me though as i cant my bow and sight down the shaft so i don't slap my hooter.
I could see some compound shooters using this instead of a scope.
I wonder if it would work over here for compound LTD, as the sight is fixed, it just doesn't have pins.
Compound LTD =
Fixed five in sight
Peep
split Fingers release
stabiliser no longer than draw length.
I don't see why they should have a problem with it, i'll post a thread on the NFAS site see what kind of response it gets. If thats ok with you.

Go for it, Kirk. I'm just spitting into the wind to see what comes back. You guys are right, peep wouldn't work with a cant, and a solid consistent anchor, no matter how it's achieved, is the key element in this system. I was thinking more along the lines of something a compounder would use, sort of an incentive to draw them into traditional. Your notion of using an SRF/peep in Compound LTD is a great one, as I know some shooters here that use a round front sight having no pins in it with a peep, basically the same principle. Who knows, we may have started something.

Hey segolden,
You weren't always ignored on TT. I posted a number of responses to your posts. Nice to see you here. Hope you and the others don't mind another desert dweller. (smiley face goes here)
