Newbie and need info

[align=center]
Hi everybody

I'm quiite new to archery ( 5 months ) and have been practicing a lot and spending a lot too before joining a club . I come from Biddulph , Staffordshire and was hoping you could point me in the right direction for my local club , I'm hoping to start field archery and get on your league table .
Would like to go to a club first , to get the ins and outs of club shooting before going to field archery shoot .

Any help is much appreciated

Dave

Hello, how do?

Have you tried here NFAS for information?
Bailsuk

Hi their

Not yet , but will take a look and see .

Thanks
AFB

Hi, There are quite a few clubs in the Staffs area. (NFAS) Lyme Valley for example.

I would recommend going to a club before you spend alot of money. I say this for various reasons.

1) Most clubs will have club bows you can 'play' with to see what sort of bow you like best without having to buy one of each. E.G. Flatbow , Logbow , Recurve and Compund.

2) You will get expert advice on the weight of bow , length and spine of arrow etc you should get (Makes sure your not overbowed) and makes sure you have the right equipment.

3) Can coach you

4) Can train you on scoring , course conduct etc

Anyway, Good luck finding a club

Well i've sent an email to 3 clubs in my local area , Lyme Valley being one of them .

Its a bit to late to see what sort of shooting i like , i've already spent 670quid on 2nd hand Merlin XS and rest , new string , arrows , sight , Release quiver , sling , target and bow quiver . Next comes a long or flat bow , thanks for the advice ... unfortunately i'm already addicted .

Glad your enjoyng it. I started on Freestlye and am now shooting AFB
Bailsuk

AFB ? ..... Explain please , i'm a newbie
Liam

Freestlye is a recurve bow loaded with accessories and AFB is an American Flatbow, your XS and bits would come under Compound Ultd

Lookie here for a full run down on bowstyles in the NFAS
AFB

I said that without moving my fingers

I'm lookin forward to trying the flatbows out , which is a good starter bow . I draw 60lbs on my XS , but understand that flatbows are tougher on the draw ? .
Dawn

Thats right I draw a 40# recurve with no problem but my 35# flatbow feels heavier

Best way would be to try some if you can If you can join a club that would probably give you the opportunity
Bailsuk

Thanks friendly Dawn , I'm going down to M.A.C very soon and am gonna try some bows out . Are the Samick bows any good ?

TBH They are all pretty good, and as a beginner (or anything less than really good) you are unlikely to notice a lot of difference in the riser, so get something that looks good and feels right. self confidence is really important in archery.
Dawn

My flat bow is a Samick SLB and its great I bought it second hand for £65 I use it more for fun and wooden arrow shoots, my recurve is my main bow and is set up for carbon arrows, but I can just grab my Samick and a handful of wooden arrows, and go and have some fun
Bailsuk

SLB is the one i was lookin at , will try one and see how things go . i'm just lookin for a point and shoot bow and they sound ideal .
Bailsuk

cannot wait to have a go , what sort of ranges do you practice at with a flatbow ?
AFB

Mine is a Tony Hudson.

You can practice a flatbow at the same distances as a recurve etc.

Depends on what sor of range you have to play on
Dawn

I shoot NFAS field, any distance from 1 yard to 60yds or even more in a competition

We shoot unmarked distance so the fun is in guessing how far it is as well as trying to hit it
Bailsuk

Well i have 560 acres at my disposal , with woodland , Fern , nettle meadows and open fields to play on . I've built a treestand for practicing on with my Merlin XS , but am lookin forward to just strolling round and pot shotting with traditional bow .... i have bales set up in various places already , but my Merlin XS fires arrows straight through them . Its a great shame really , there are rabbits , pheasants and deer hide out in the woods . But i save them for shooting with my camera , no hunting .
kirk

560 acres Ok i can see an opening for a new club here.
With plenty of parking.

If you get yourself a stickbow you won't regret it, Hey and no more pass throughs
Bailsuk

I originally wanted to try archery 15 years ago , when a magazine my nan had in her house had a write up on bowhunting in america . Unforunately my ex wife did not like me taking up new hobbies , so when she left i sorted money outgoings first and then went set myself up on the archery . I am lucky to have 2 uncles who live on neighbouring farms and like i said , they have a fair bit of ground between them although parking not so good .
I cannot wait to get a traditional bow , but i do love my Merlin XS . Funnily it was a friend from America on http://www.huntingnet.com/ who referred me to Merlin Archery ( i'd never heard of them ) and after reading about the XS i had to get one , i put a search in on the Net and there was one on the NFAS site and the next week it was mine . Love it , smooth , powerful ( hence the pass throughs ) and looks great .
