Marksman Portland Riser QuestionOK, first question - any idea if it is possible to get hold of a riser for a Marksman Portland? Mine cracked the first time I assembled it after [cough] years in the attic...
moved to recurve section by Steve B. CaptainBeaky I moved it here as I think you will get more responses here and also keeps the welcome area for just that

I don't know of one at the moment but I will ask around for you

Hi CaptainBeaky
My husband is the son of the bowyer (Keith) that designed and made the Portland and Portland 2000. He said that if it is the old wooden riser of the original Portland (not Portland 2000) then it is very unlikely that you can get one. They have some in the shop but due to the age of them, they are for display purpose only. He said the nearest replacement is their long handled Rapier. Also designed by Keith. You never know you luck though, you may find a riser but due to the age of them the same thing might happen with that. Are the limbs okay though, may be worth having them checked over.

Hi Sam
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, it is the wooden riser of the original Portland, circa 1978. Doesn't sound very hopeful for getting a replacement, then Would the limbs fit the Rapier riser, or am I getting this mixed up? If so, are these available?
The limbs, as far as I can tell, are fine. They have always been well cared for, not allowed to get wet, not banged around etc. I had shot maybe two dozen or so rounds with them, and there is barely a mark on them.

Hi CaptainBeaky
Just checked with hubbie, the limbs you have will only fit an original wooden portland or a KG1. Probably the best thing to do is give them a ring. There is a link for KG archery in the links section.
Bushy - what you saw was most likely a Portland 2000 not an origianl Portland, they have some original Portlands but are displays models only.
Hope this helps

Hi there. I have been to KG today and it is a Portland 2000 that they have still a nice bow but no where near as nice as the KG1 or the nemesis there wasn't any Portland (wooden risers) that I could see the nearest thing I could see was the Rapier which is more like the old KG1 as I'm sure Sam will tell you.
Oh well done Sam for Hanson I didnt see you to talk to after the shoot. Fantastic wood though

Thanks Sam. I'll have to give KG a ring, and meanwhile return to my trusty TS4.

Update:
I have been in touch with Neill at KG, and after emailing some photos to get an initial opinion, the Portland has been posted up there to be repaired. Having now seen it, they confirm that it can be restored to shooting condition.
I am now trying not to chew my fingernails off up to the wrists with impatience

Greta news that they can restore it to its former glory, I just know your gonna love shooting it when it comes back

Can't shoot this weekend, but should manage next Sunday, or possibly the Bank Holiday. I'll get my son to taker some more photos - he took some good ones last weekend of me shooting the TS4.
His arrows have arrived - well, the bits, anyway, so we will start on those this weekend as well.
("When can we start, Dad?")
Also need to make a sheath for the knife I have acquired for digging arrows out of trees - MOD survival knife with a cord-wrap handle. It's a crowbar with a point and an edge...

Alright, way to go. Wouldn't mind seeing that knife with the bow as well, Capt.

You asked... Yur 'tis...
Pics of the crowbar knife will appear when I have done the sheath - bits ordered from today, following a lengthy read of the how-tos on the BB forums. I'll post some photos of the Portland in action when I get down to the wood

I have to confess to being extremely nervous when I braced it for the photo, and even more so when I drew it. I was half-expecting to hear a "crack" at any moment (pure paranoia, I know) and get a whack on the head from a flying limb, but KG have done a marvellous job, and it seems fine.
As I said earlier, more photos when I get to shoot it Monday week. In the meantime I have more arrows to make.
Or rather, No1 Son has some arrows to make, with some assistance from Dad!
