Learning the Art - Week 1

I figured that a few other people have posted VERY similar threads to this one however, I feel it would be beneficial to new guys such as myself if they have as many resources as possible to refer to before “making the plunge” into the wonderfully expensive world of Archery.

So here goes......

It’s 7 o’clock sharp and we turn up at the hall where we sign in, get sized for our gear and are given instruction on how range etiquette works, which words to listen out for basic terminology.
The Coach’s daughter (25 British records at 15yrs of age!!) shows us how it’s done and with that we begin.
We are brought up to shooting line where I am asked to pull the bow back and let it down again. This allows June (Coach) to see my musculature and if I’m doing my draw as I should be. I’m then asked to do the same with an arrow on the bow and told to loose an arrow in my own time. This arrow flies low of the mark but score is not important at this point!

Thought the evening the same format continues – June monitors my form and comments that I need to work on my release more than anything else – However my last end resulted in 3 golds and an inner red. Lovely.

The only let down to the evening was the rather “Hurried” way we were shunted out of the hall for the regular Club shooters to come in at 8:00pm

Tune in next week for more...........

Great to hear you had a good first night.

3 golds and an inner red WELL DONE!!!!!

Don't worry about being kicked out, soon you'll be the regular shooter, getting miffed about giving up half an hour of your time to beginners
Twig-Slinger

It wasn't myself who got miffed by it, It was my friend who had yet to fire his last end.

However, I was miffed when a seven yr old girl with a pink bow hit 8 succesive golds on the boss next to me, she then sticks her tongue out and then ran to her Dad giggling!!

Valuable lesson from the 7 year old though Twig-Slinger, there is always somebody better than you and the age of them is no limit. One thing to remember is that when you get real good there is always somebody that will beat you, that said what you could do is do twice that amount in gold in front of her the stick you tongue out back at her        how sweet revenge is ....

Seriously though , glad you had a great time and enjoyed the first lesson, it gets better as it goes and the sport really grabs you with how easy it looks but how hard it really is ... enjoy it it is fun though
Mjollnir

just goes to show it ain't what you shoot it is the way you shoot it
Twig-Slinger

 Little Sod

With all due respect to her she's only been shooting since last year!
Liam

Glad you enjoyed your first go Twig Slinger, as said before it gets better and better as you go along, of course there will be bad days as with everything but in general as you learn more about this sport you will grow to love it even more
Onewackybow

I don't tend to bother what other people score as once I'm on the shooting line it's just me, my bow, an arrow and the target. So it's me I'm competing against...

Having said that I do take some satisfaction when the "younger ones" beat themselves up over a few dropped points!

The target handicapping system helps

One day I'll be competing with them in terms of scores!
