Garden archeryHad a great time yesterday lunch shooting in my garden, so I thought I'd ask the questions:
Who practices in their garden? What do you use (bosses, safety mechanisms, etc.)? How far can you shoot? If you don't/can't, why not & would you want to?

Despite living in a large metropolitan area (3.5 million) I am fortunate to have a 1/3 acre lot with a 7' block wall around the back. From the far corner of my side yard across the back patio I can get 48 yards. I have a 48" high density foam target boss I set on a wood frame and shoot there on the days I don't go to a field or target range.

Yep but its only to try a get my stance right and fingers, arms, head and all that sort of thing not for distances as I can only get about 8 mt in the back yard to the boss. We do have a field beside us and we have permission to use it the only thing is too many kids around us so I'd never get peace and safety would be a problem.
A friend who has a plot of land out her back and its all closed in and she has said I can use it anytime would get about 40 mt so I might take her up on it.

I shoot in my garden.
I can get upto 30 yards from the back of my house to the bottom of the garden. Theres no problem with overshoot because just behind the screen of conifers is a green 15ft insulated steel wall that the local supermarket has put up to keep down the noise from their store. I use a layered foam butt and theres an old fence panel just behind it to catch the stray ones.
I must be a true archery nut because it was one of the reasons why i bought the house in the first place.

Our house sits on a slope and out the back I could get up to 25m but I usually stick to 20m. and that way its flat. Out front I ould get up to 45/50m, though for a variety of reasons, not least of which is that its uphill I havn't used it yet. Also means shooting over the top of the vegtable plot, where Mrs Í is usually to be found! Unfortuneately its not possible (safety) to bring the two areas together otherwise I could have a 90m FITA in the garden, a distance which I have yet to shoot

Can shoot up to about 80yds in my parents back! Could go further, but I'd not be happy with the amount of overshoot land behind it, just in case a freak incident caused the arrow to flick off the top of the boss. Have got some safety netting too, so theoretically could go for a York, or a Fita, but generally can't be bothered to hump it across the field and put it up, so I stick to a western, or a portsmouth. However as they'd not be witnessed and it's a hollow pb if you get one if no one's there to retify it, I generally just work on technique/bow tuning there at around the thirty metre mark. As for targets, I have two 122cm straw bosses and associated A stands. So yeah... I'm fairly lucky in this regard
Hardly ever use it though, as going to the club is far easier.

Re: Garden archeryI'll be in my old gardening spot this summer after I extend my side yard
range from 25 yards to 38 yards. My target backing is 8" thick x 24" x 48"
cardboard, and my backstop is one layer of 1/2" plywood over one layer of
7/16" OSB... The backstop is 8 foot x 8 foot...
With the weather getting nice I try to shoot 30 arrows each day at lunch
time from 18 meters. I feel it helps keep me loose for the weekend of
archery I normally plan out where I'll shoot upwards of 200 arrows on a
Saturday, and at least another 100+ on Sunday. Of course this all depends
on what the family has planned, and whether or not nature's weather
is willing to cooperate for the weekend at hand?

I can shoot in my back garden (10 yds ish) using a shed as a safety net but normally I just use the bigger back garden (17 acres) so I can shoot all the distances we need to, even Clout! Through summer I just leave a target out in the field and hope the horses don't get too hungry. I can also get about 18 yards in the barn if I'm really desperate and can be arsed to move 2 tractors and a wagon...so usually I don't!

I got a boss in the back garden and get out there to relax and just practice anchor point and loose more than anything its alright but I cant get very far so there is not much i can do but my neighbour dont like ti and pops his head over the fence to ask whether I have a licence to shoot that

Suppose I should actually say about my set-up; I have one of those tuff-shot cube's that I throw down when I'm in the mood for some flinging. I could get up to 15 yards but I stick to around 10, with my shed and then the neighbours breeze-block walled garage behind the target, an 8-foot fence on my immediate left and on my right there's about 10 yards of space to the neighbours hedge. Nobody's made any comments yet but, as I work from home I exclusively practice during lunch-time on a weekday, most people are at work

I sometimes shoot in the garden area (Well, the driveway) No distance to speak of somewhere around 10 feet. That's all I need to keep my form. My Good Lady is aware that I shoot so does not venture out. Same with me if she is shooting. The boss is under the carport (The roof was installed 3feet higher than the norm to accommodate longbows as well)
Brick walls either side, plus a trailer & 2 sheds to stop stray arrows. If I do get a stray arrow at that distance, I should consider packing up the game.
I did have a smile a year or two ago. Prospective new neighbours were to move in next door, when they saw our equipment they pulled out of the sale. Can't think why, it's not as if we are a bunch of unruly adolescents. The trailer is also on view from their back garden (if you look over the fence), with our archery logo plastered on the side.

I do. I can shoot 18m (20 yards). I setup a backstop net just-in-case.
