Exercise Routines?Hi all,
Sorry if this seems like a lame question, but I'm just wondering what exercise routines people follow to ensure they're able to shoot all day long for those "long" rounds. Are there specific exercises that work the right muscles? Do people find the "training bands" work well? etc.
cheers

I don't do any specific exercises for Archery, OK I do general weight work anyway.
I merely aim to shoot about 3 dozen more than 144 (the largest amount need for a Tournament) once a week.
Possibly not the best technique, but it works for me.

Bernie, check out some of the other threads - particularly the ones where Freddy boy is having a pop at yours truly. Seems like he's feeling much better if his barbed comments are anything to go by.
Good job I've got a thick skin (And yes I know I'm leaving myself wide open for a further "fredattack") or a boy could feel unloved around here...
As for warmup exercise for me its a bit of light dusting, vacuuming and some ironing...

I also have no set exercise routines other then to shoot my bow(s) as often as I can. Some days it may be as little as 72 arrows, other days it may be as many as 200...
I think you'll find that once you begin shooting your bow and you stay with it on a routine bases, this could probably be the best exercise to keeping your form and stamina.

Generally in the last few years I havent done much archery related exercise routines but I did play a lot of rugby up until and injury but now I am trying to get to the gym at least 3 times a week to improve back shoulder and arm muscles for drawing bows and improve stamina.
Getting into a healthy eating plan to improve strength and general health. Other than that the only other exercise is mentally to improve my target panic at nationals

Wintellect, I find that warming up prior to shooting and if a break is had prior to starting again a great help in keeping consistency with my shot sequence. Bow fitness plays a good part in being able to maintain strong shooting thoughout a tounament. By saying that though compound bow fitness and recurve fitness varies greatly IMHO, because of the let of on compounds it is easier to get away with more, if you don't shoot approx 100 every second day with recurve I personally think you are at if for fun, mind you that is the basis of the spoort and why we started I guess.
So I suppose that maybe we should ask wintellect how serious are you about the sport? Do you want to be a one day a week shooter or more seroius about the goals you have ?
For my self I shoot 3 times a week at the moment I am a compound shooter, and I am about to raise the stakes to practice evry day at least 60 arrows, because our National Championships are coming up soon and I would like to realise some of my goals

I'm appreciating all the feedback, so thanks everyone.
I'd like to get serious - and would love to shoot for an hour before work every day. The main issue for me is a place to shoot. I'm considering getting a garden setup.

Thats what I've done. Cost me around £180 for the lot - stand, boss, targets, backstop netting etc.
Because I work from home and will be able to see the bodd from my desk - I'm hoping to start shooting every day weather permitting.
Shame is I've not even set it up yet due to this darned chest infection. But, it's on the way out so soon, very soon...

The only consideration I would have in doing so much shooting at home is, if you are currently being looked after by a coach to get to a certain point you need to make sure that your practice is perfect practice, it is so easy to shoot in bad habits that can take your coach weeks or even months to remove, so make sure that your form is correct when shooting at home, always get your from checked at the club by your coach to make sure that if you do shoot at home lots you are not letting bad habits creep in.
I think that all coaches would agree with the above.

Fair point Steve B. Throughout the summer I would expect to be at the club with the coaches at least once maybe twice a week to help make sure I dont get into any bad habits (other than thread hijacking of course)...

Onewackybow - cool, that's exactly what I had in mind.
Steve B - I hear ya, and appreciate the comments. I've already been harassing the coach at the club endlessly
