From your description the best thing to try would be to get the hard disk out of your old computer and mount it in your new one (or get a USB hard-disk caddy and access it through that).

Quite easy to do but can appear daunting.

Edit: Regarding hard-disk caddies, this is the kind of thing I'm talking about:

This for an IDE disk, you'll need a different type if it's SATA.

If youre going to rely on your computer for your business then get yourself a portable hard drive and back up all your data once a week. then if it all goes horribly wrong all you have to do is get your new computer and download all the old data from your portable.

Always back up your data!!!

There are some really good ones out there now. I have one which came with some pre installed software that automatically clones your PC onto the hard drive and all I have to do is plug it into a USB port.

Like the others said, I would seriously consider getting a Networkable hard drive connected to your router. They are cheep ~£60 and nower days dead easy to set up, then you are not dependant on anyone machine. Also a regular backup mechanisum, such as burning data to CD, is advisable.

to recover current lost data as Jim says, I would put your old hard disk in the new box as a slave drive. It is almost certainly readable.
