Celtic Dargon's arras

Split off from Celtic Dragon's welcome thread here - JimN

Nuts, just hit my first snag!!!

The fletchings I was going to use fall foulof the NFAS regs, typical.

OH well, rethink time, basically its feather only, and I hate feathers, I much prefer synthetic.
Dawn

Oh but if your making wooden arrows its so much nicer to fletch them with feathers, and they are far more forgiving than plastic.

Have a look at the thread 'cresting wooden arrows' in the arrows and accesories section, there are some great ideas there
Celtic Dragon

Well I can still do my colour way thankfully.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Oh well feather it is. As long as I can use my nocks I'll survive.
Celtic Dragon

Dawn, do like your cresting very smart.

Thank you very much celtic Dragon    but did you check out those done by Eaglearcher    they are so special
Celtic Dragon

I did, indeed very plush!!!

Nothing I like would fit on a shaft. Dragons are kinda large.

JimN

Ayup Celtic Dragon.

Just to let everyone else know, Celtic Dragon is another member over from British Blades (here) and was pointed in this direction by Captain Beaky.
Celtic Dragon

I am indeed

Although I was an archer long before I got interested in blades. I'm also an air rifle shooter and hunter.

Sounds like a challenge... Dragon's probably bigger than the wasps on my last set... but there was plenty of room left... hmmm...

Ruler's coming out, and photoshop's loading.
Celtic Dragon

Well if you manage it, I'll give you a pic to scale accordingly!!
Chedawan

Hmmm... dang this'll be fiddly, but if I can drop 'em on dead straight, and I mean dead straight I reckon you could get away with a sinuous dragon winding around your arrow Shaft.  Bit of planning to be done as I'd still be keen to have 2mm overlap... but I reckon it can be done.
Celtic Dragon

Now why you can see why I didn't look at a dragon crest
Chedawan

Challenge taken... got my coloured pencils out and everything!
Celtic Dragon

Your either bored and like a challange or insane.

IF Dawns anything to go by, my moneys on the latter

They aren't mutually exclusive traits you know!

Anyhow, I've sketched up my dragon as I would like it to look... and drawn with a sharpie how I'd like it to go around an arrow using some offcuts.  now to get to work... this would be a lot easier to paint on twelve times... but I shall do it with photoshop for I am a mentalist!
Dawn

Patiently waiting for pictures
Celtic Dragon

Mmmmm what gives me the feeling I'm going to have a practice set and a posh set
Steve B

Way to go Celtic, Love the concept of what is happening here, but I like Dawn am waiting for the Pictures
Celtic Dragon

Steve, if you like these, wait till I get round to making my primative arrows
Eaglearcher

Hi Dragon.

Welcome from a fellow Bedfordian.

I assume you shoot longbow or AFB as you need wooden arrows. Believe me the Feathers are so much better when shooting off a shelf or hand. If the fletch hits your hand or shelf the feather collapses so much better than a vane and gives a better flight. Feathers also steer arrows better. I know some compound shooters who still use feathers on their alluminium arrows for indoor shooting.

As far as the cresting goes you could be really creative and have the dragon twisted around the shaft.
Eaglearcher

Oops!!!
I just read ALL of this thread and read Chedawns post.
Sorry guys.
Im looking forward to seeing the piccys too.
Celtic Dragon

I'll be shooting an AFB, looking at a 68" from quicks 32 @28 for the time being, then its shopping list time

Never had a problem with vanes when I shot barebow, although that was more years ago than I care to remember. Feathers are just a pet hate of mine, thats all, but atleast I can keep my clour way that I wanted.

Still unsure as to cresting, my tattoo won't fit either, and no I'm not going to post pics as you'd see more of me than I'd wish in public

Should have the first batch built in a week or so.

Oh and a word of warning, I don't use varnish, to me its an invention of the devil as to what I'll use you will just all have to wait and see.

What are your feelings on Danish oil or similar? That's all I use.

ForestMaiden

Ok newbie here and of course being from canada..... who the heck or..... what the heck are the british blades ?  And do i dare seek them out ? lol
Celtic Dragon

Its a forum, originally for UK makers and collectors of knives. Like all things, its grown beyond its original conception and now is worldwide.

Their a friendly bunch, but posting on there does get expensive with comments like oooooohhhhh, sharp, shiney, must have

Celtic Dragon

Ooooo shafts and parts are here

All I need now is a visit from dad with my fletching jig.

Oh and a bow!
Celtic Dragon

Well the first batch are almost built. I am convinced that these will fly like corkscrews!!!!!! But I'm not bothered as they were an experiment to begin with and I have learnt a fair few things.

1) I'm going to use parrallel points from here on in.
2) Use 3" fletches not 4"
3) I'm not convinced about crestings.
4) I still like my fletch colours 15 years on

Hopefully pics will be available by the weekend.
Chedawan

Looking forward to seeing them.

Work's a bit busy at the moment for me, but there's definitely the makings of a dragon to wrap around shafts in there... got two out of three body parts to marry up... just got to get the third in line and he's good to go... just need a steady hand twelve times after that
Celtic Dragon

Right Pics

As I said I'm not convinced about crestings, but if you see this colour way in a shoot it could be me

Now to start building my decent sets up as these were an experiment and will fly like corkscrews.
Eaglearcher

Dont be so hard on yourself. Theyre nice lookin arras!
My first set were no where near as good as those. If they fly as well as they look, youre going to be fine.
Im going to have to get myself some more shafts, im itching to have a go at some more and give these slide transfer sheets a go.
Chedawan

Nice looking arrows.  Good work!
Dawn

They look great Celtic Dragon

Surely they cant be your first attempt    you should be proud of them
Celtic Dragon

Dawn, they are my first scratch built arrows. Obviously I have done fletching and renocking before.

Also they were the first arrows I've used crestings on.

You can go to the top of the class

I have been maling wooden arrows for years but not as professional as yours
Celtic Dragon

Up close there nothing special, trust me.

Fletchings move about 1/8 inch over all 10 arrows.

Emd of the month I'll be ordering 2 doz to make up properly.
CaptainBeaky

Blimey - they're good!

Top marks, that man.

They look great! Just make a mark on your fletching jig clamp and make sure all your feathers are starting at the same point and that will make them all line up right PM me if you need any help with stuff

And you know where to buy your next supplies from…

Jason
Celtic Dragon

I did, but the jig just about handles 4" fletches.
jaselpool

Celtic Dragon wrote:

The ones I sell handle up to around 5.5" and then you have the big one from Richard Head that handles anything up to 8" - sounds like you have either a Sherwood or a Cartel jig or something similar usually used for aluminium target arrows and small flights

Jase
Celtic Dragon

It is indeed a Sherwood

Wasn't a problem on my new set!! 3" fletches on carbon.

YUp I'm a traitor to my heratige and bought a compound
Celtic Dragon

Right an update. Yesterday I bought a Samick recurve hunter.

These arrows are in intensive care!! With the 11 I went to the range with only 1 came back without a scratch, and they did fly like corkscrews.

8 lost atleast 1 fletch, 2 snapped, oh well, its only more money I need to spend.

Now I have an idea, but I need a trip to the art shop to see if I can do it with the new shafts. Then if it does I need to ring Jaselpool.

As next weekend is Avalon's 2 dayer I have 2 weeks to get a new set of darts built.

Hi bud

Did you build the arrows to the new bow? Sounds like they could be the wrong spine.  If you need new shafts in a hurry you'll need to get me sooner rather than later as stock sells quickly. Also better to email me with any questions rather than trying to get me by phone info@thelongbowshop.com.

Cheers

Jase
Celtic Dragon

Its not going to be a rush job, next weekend I'll be shooting compound, the samick is a bit of fun for when I don't want to take things seriously.

The arrows are probably a little underspined and the next ones will be heavier, but i want ot see if the art idea will work first.

Still these arrows were built for flat decoration so I really didn't care if 0 survived, my carbons on the other hand......

If I can get down the art shop today, then I'll be in contact mid week.
Celtic Dragon

Idea has worked!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well partly, I want to have another play tomorrow night to make sure of a couple of things.

Down side is that it takes a minimum of 48 hours to dry!

here's a taster

Dawn

Now this looks interesting

looking forward to hearing what you are doing Celtic D
Celtic Dragon

Interesting, yes, mindbending, yes as you have to think in multiple layers in 1 and on different planes and

mucky as hell!!!! If you have kids and try this method, they are going to want to help, trust me...

Oh and it stinks to high heaven too, I've been high as a kite all night!!!!

The madness will be explained in a short vid when I do the real ones.
