Anyone start with a Compound Bow?

Hi,

I am just looking at starting Archery for the first time. Looks like the local club has a lack of equipment
due to a recent break in.

I don't really want to buy two different lots of gear if I don't have to.

So is it a good / bad idea to start with a compound bow?

only bow i have ever shot, maybe not the best way to go, but i had a history of rifle shooting so the safety side was simple to pick up. i think it will be beneficial to do it properly though, learn on a recurve, then decide what direction you wanna go in.

why do you wanna go compound straight away?!?!?

I would start with a beginners recurve if i were you....................most compound shooters do.
Most clubs don't normally have compounds in their beginners kit, though budget ones are available.

Whatever you end up with, enjoy your shooting.

I think you would be best starting with a beginners recurve to get the technique, then try all the different options before you make your final choice.

I hope you will be able to use a club bow because until you have learned the basics it will be quite difficult for you to know what draw length and draw weight you will need.

Thanks all for the advice.

Had a very long chat with one of the club members (also a top U.K. compound archer) and now know which way I am going.

I am going to start with a compound. No bad recurve habits to unlearn then apparently.

Fine by me, as I don't really want two lots of kit if I can start how I mean to go on.

Release aid and scope sort of leads on from my air rifle HFT shooting.
I also like the many technical aspects that appeal to the engineer in me.

I'll be back with updates and let you all know how I get on.

Should be fun.

good luck then fella, what bow has he recommended you get??? what is your draw length? what poundage you goin for, what release?!?!?!
we need to klnow these things,

btw, triggers on release nothing like air rifle, i shot for daystate for a number of years so don't be fooled its similar!!!!

I agree with Vince............................on all he's said.
Ive shot riffle too, not at Vince's level mind you... Compound is different, as is any bow compared to a riffle. Crossbow is closer IMHO.

Hi,

Quick update.

I now have a complete setup.

A very nice almost new condition Hoyt Ultratec bought off this very forum.

Also came with 20 odd Axis FMJ arrows.

The draw and arrow lengths are all pretty much perfect for me. (Right in the middle of the cam and a 1/2 setting range at the moment)

First session using it at the club went very well last Tuesday. Started at 10 yards and after a few ends and a broken nock we moved to 20yards.

It surprised me at the difference between the compound club recurve bows. I found it easier and more natural to shoot using the scope and peep sight.

The poundage is wound down at the moment, until I have a lot more muscle memory.

Had a session re-fletching some of my arrows and sorting out the peep with a Tru-peep instead of the rubber band one.

So looking forward to tonight for another session at the club.

One of our young archers got himself a Hoyt compound and seems very happy with it! Its way too technical looking for me and I was staggered how much these bows cost when new! When you consider how much you can get a recurve for at entry level, you have to wonder why more archers aren't put off by entry level compound shooting!

Had another great night last Tuesday.

Managed to have most of my six arrows in the gold. Mostly nines with the odd ten at 20 yards.

One of the other club members put all six arrows in at the same distance touching each other in a less than 1" group!!

Nice to see what can be achieved! I was impressed to say the least. Plus it was very windy.

Hi,

I did my first scoring round last night at 20 meters.

We have a 300 scheme at each distance. You have to score above 300 with a compound (250 for a recurve) to move to the next distance. Using 36 arrows and FITA scoring on a 120cm face.

My first attempt I managed 329.

It would have been a little higher than that as well if my scope hadn't fallen off after 4 ends.

I though something was buzzing on release of my arrows. Lesson learned though. Check to make sure it is tight next time. My arrows were creeping higher up the target and I scored 4 sevens.

Later on I managed my first perfect 60 with six arrows on the same end. (After fixing the scope). Funny how you relax and shoot better when you are not writing the score down!

I swapped to a brand new Carter Sensation release aid for the first time last night and much prefer it to the wrist release that came with the bow.

I'm looking forward to moving up to 25m next time.
