AFB

AFBs at the NFAS Scottish Nationals

Could be interesting this year as I have heard that some people are taking up 3 piece takedown flatbows and are entering as AFB. I will be interested in seeing what happens as at some shoots I have seen these bows force to enter H/T at some opens and allowed in the AFB class in others.

Once a ruling has been made at a major event could set a standard??? What do you all think
JimN

There is no specific rule against three-part AFB's so I would imagine it will have to be treated on a case-by-case basis, i.e. if it felt a particular bow breaks the "Bows must be free from any sight, mark or blemish which could be used for aiming." statement.  But you're right to highlight this as the organisers do need to decide what they are going to do about the three-parters before they get surprised on the day.

I have no real preferance but have heard some sat that the bolts act as some sort of stabilizer? I shoot to try and beat myself *shrug*

I have ben asked at shoots before what I think and basically say I have no objection to them as I shoot for the great day out and the company
JimN

Ah, yes.  I'd heard about the bolts as stabilisers thing, completely forgot about that.  I suppose they need to decide whether it really makes that much difference to the performance, I can't see how it could personally but I know nothing

If it was down to me I'd let them play

The rules on the NFAS website are incorrect in the written rules it says the bow sould be one piece. this info has been wrong on the website rules since 2004 which i pointed out. Someone did shoot a two piece Takedown at the 2004 3Ds and was moved to HT after first day

Apart from the fact the metal pins add quite a lot of extra weight to the Bow which does help make the Bow more stable while shooting and will give a small advantage.

If Archers want takedown AFBs why not just attend an AGM and get it voted in. just turning up and shooting is the wrong way to do this as it just upsets a lot of people including the people who have spent lots of money on a takedown AFB they wont be allowed to use.

If a take down flatbow was allowed in a major comp would this set a presedent??
Borderbows

This is a good issue

Alot of these bows are based around the american style AFB, which has a flick in later inches of the limb tips, this flick doesnt conform to the continious curve at brace height rule in many countries.
We have no objection to either, its just a case of optimising the design for the rules.
From a ease of use idea, the concept of a take-down makes life easer and will get around the Postoffice/other courier reluctance to transport anything considered long...
One issue is that every country has different rules as to what is a flatbow.  There are rules where the bow must weigh less than 1KG or it should fit in a 4" tube.
This is why we offer the 3 main types of flatbow we do.  If a 3 peice or a takedown is needed, then thats fine too.  If there is no need for a continuous curve then we can have a little more freedom in the way we design our bows. But you might not be allowed to shoot in other countries, and i think international shooting is a growth area.

We do think that the AFB should have a traditional look, and adding plunger buttons, stabilisers, and that kind of gubbins is the relm of the recurve and not the ethics of the flatbow... These would be the next move as Alu risers and ILF fittings are already available. so the next logical step is a button.  SO where do we as archers draw the line? Fun question and not one that will be answered easily. We like the Howard Hill style simplicity, short riser, long smooth slender lines.
