a daunting task indeedabout ooh? 20 years ago i bought a barnett safari compound bow, it was in kit form and took about an hour to build and spray, literally. very simple .i had no idea of measurements lengths or weights, i got the bits pin sight, quiver arrows, and that was it i shot it all the time and even hit small stuff out to 30 yards ,every couple of arrows, coke can size stuff, any way back to today the choice is endless, where do i start /well i want to shoot 3d ,hunt style and i want to use a compound, but with so many cams and limb styles ,are there any better than another, any to avoid? do you realy get a good deal with kits, and can i buy from the states being in the UK, the thing i remember about the bow was how tame it was, it fired with a satisfying thung ,and didnt vibrate very much, but because i never used finger tabs my fingers were like tingling leather, but why now with all this technology are some of the bows rattly, and the cams come out of alignment then theres the breaking limbs problem with the big manufacturer, all within days of purchasing,is there a short list of bows to avoid,

Shortlist of bows to avoid ??????
Tough question and I think it would be grosely unfair to single anything out, yes certain manufacturers are having 'issues' at the moment but its a phase that they all seem to go through, they are pushing technology to the limits to provide the best equipment and ultimatly this does unfortunatly lead to failures.
As for advice on a particular bow for you we need to asess how much are you looking at spending on a bow and accessories amongst other things.
As we always tend to say, try a few first before you buy if you can and for your first bow why not have a look around the second hand market. But first get yourself down to a club or decent retailer, these can measure you up and advise you on what set up you need to be looking at.
HTH a bit, others will be along with some sound advice, and dont be afraid to ask any questions you have

I remember those old Barnetts Joekid I still have one of the Jennings kit bows but I don't shoot it anymore
Liam has given you sound advice, I now shoot recurve so cant really comment on the latest compounds, but I do believe you need to try some if you can, I think as with most things, its a case of some suit some people not others, so try as many as you can

Barnett safari's - that takes me back - my first compound! Mine was bought complete rather than in kit form.
I would go with Liams advice, compound-wise, as a bow that suits one person will not suit another, even if they have a similar draw-weight/draw length. You really do need to shoot a bow to see if it suits you.

All the responses to date have been spot on joekid. I recall getting back into archery after a break and going to the local club to "check it out" then the hard part was to decide what to get. I would suggest joining your local club (hopefully they wil have a heap of compound archers) and ask lots of questions even ask for a shot of thier bows. That way you will get some "form" back and know what your draw length will be within an 1/2' more than likely. Then try out every compound that you think you would like to shoot and the one that feels the best that is the one to buy.
I really don't think that there are any bow manufacturers that I would steer clear from , one chinese company I know of has a series of bows called the "Shandon" I think one of em looks like a copy of a Matthews. I would be a little on the wary side of those . I have shot Merlin, Hoyt, PSE and at the moment shoot Bowtech and they have all been great bows and thay all had the draw backs as well.
The one thing I will say is DO NOT RUSH into it regardsless of how you feel as the money you will spend could be waisted.
If you have any questions then I am sure that there are many people to assist you. Good luck and make sure you let us know of your progress please
