My AFB came with a bit about not keeping it in a hot car. Well when I get off work it is 95 - 103F out side.  Should I not shoot my bow in this heat?
Buy the time it drops into the 80s the knats are  at you in waves.

Hi Demain,

I am no expert in AFB's but usually manufacturers warn about keeping bows (Particularly longbows) in cars simply because the heat can build very quickly in a car and get a lot higher than the outside ambient temperature. This can adversely affect the glues and if shot straight away could cause the bow to take on a set curve as it is strung and cools (loosing poundage, tiller etc), de-laminate or worse.

I would probably be reluctant to shoot a self yew bow in those temperatures but as most AFBs incorporate fiberglass use modern glues and other materials that help the bow return to its original position. So if it is given chance to acclimatise to the temperature I would imagine that it would be ok to shoot. But to be on the safe side if I were you I would contact the manufacturer to get their opinion.

If your AFB is built with modern materials and glues you should be ok, if you bought your bow in your state the Bowyer should have the experiance and skill to know his limitations and build it to stand these temps. with those temps leaving in your car it will be a lot hotter in the car than outside and wouldn't be good for the bow, also if the bow is dark glass or carbon leaving in direct sunlight isn't a good idea, When not shooting I always seek out a tree of bush for some shade in hot weather.

I know in Portugal a few years ago the temp got to 45C and a couple of bows broke in the heat but most were ok.

A good friend who lives in Tucson (Arizona) is a fan of the ELB. In the summer heat (Tucson is hotter than Colorado) he switches to a fiberglass laminated longbow (AFB to those across the pond) and leaves the Yew, hickory and bamboo ELBs at home.
